Going Away

Mishmash

by admin on October 5, 2008

This is getting a little freaky.  It’s getting to the point now where I’ve been through so many towns and to so many pubs and rest stops that they’re all merging into one.  I’m starting to have trouble remembering when stuff happened… was it yesturday, the day before or the day before that?

None of us can work it out.

It’s a little frightening.

You know you’ve been roughing it too long when grass seems like an unnecessary luxury.

Day 24 – Gilgandra to Gunnedah

by admin on October 4, 2008

Hi y’all!!

Great day.  We’re now a full day ahead – woohoo!

Today Dad had planned to do 201.2km to get us to Gunnedah, but since everyone (Jack mostly) really didn’t want to have a day that long at this stage in the trip, they were planning to stop short of the town and eat into a bit of their extra time.

Pretty crappy start to the day.  Jack was really tired, ghostly pale and really just wasn’t feeling too crash hot at all.

After lunch at a gorgeous park in a little town called Coonabarrabran (big name for a small place), he really picked up and got his colour back into him.

It’s funny, cause he never goes great in the morning, when you’d think his legs would be freshest, but he always does better in the afternoons.

But, yes, very tough day.

It’s now fourteen minutes past five in the afternoon and we’re about 35 km out of town.  Looking good though, they’re really determined to get in.  Going to be a little bit of riding in the dark, which is not good at all (really scary in fact), but still.  200km under the belt and still a full day ahead.

Day 24 – Coonabarrabran break

by admin on October 4, 2008

Just saw Jack lying on the ground at the Coonabarrabran lunch stop, with Mum standing over him dropping red frogs into his mouth.

The mind baffles, it really does.

Quote of the Day

by admin on October 4, 2008

Tina’s car is a luxurious, leather bound Land Rover with amazing air

conditioning.

Harry is in the front seat.

They’re driving really slowly along beside the riders.  Haz rolls down his (power) window and sticks his head out to cheer them on a bit, give them some encouragement.

This is what he comes up with:

“Geez, it’s hot out here.”

He then stuck his head back in the car and wound the window back up.

Truly inspiring.

Day 22 – Nyngan to Gunnedah

by admin on October 3, 2008

Still going in awesome fashion.

The boys are now a full day ahead, which is handy.  The support crew are getting into a nice little habit where we wave the boys off in the morning, finish packing up and go to the bakery.  Usually we get ourselves a snack and a coffee/hot chocolate and something yummy for the boys/girls for morning tea.  At the moment we’re stopped at a rest stop, having just passed the boys drinks a little way out of Warren, a really cute little town.  In ten or fifteen we’ll go, pass them drinks from the car window and then go ahead about fifteen kilometres, make lunch and wait for them to rock up.  There’s an awful lot of sitting around waiting during the say, but it’s good fun.

Mum and I are getting sick of ABBA and Meatloaf (never would have guessed that would happen).  We’ve [click to continue...]

Day 20 – Going Backwards

by admin on October 1, 2008

Bit of a pain of a day.  After driving Jack and Dad out to where they finished yesturday (about 17km on from the camp spot) Mum and I went 120km back to Broken Hill to try and pick up the (hopefully) fixed bike.  No such luck when we first arrived, so we spent the rest of the day alternately seeing the sights and checking back in at the bike shop.

We went to the Big Picture Mint and Gallery.  It’s main feature is a 100m long cancas outback scene paining by Peter Anderson.  I have to admit that while I liked alot of his other stuff I wasn’t keen on the big one.  It would have taken a huge amount of time though, and from that view it was very impressive.

We also went to the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery a couple of doors down from the hotel.  It was realy nice.  There was a gorgeous one of a girl there, Memories by John William Godward. [click to continue...]

Quote of the Day

Nine year old Tim pokes his head into the Sinclair tent, where I’m giving Jack a leg massage.

Tim: What!?!  Why does he get a massage?
Mum: He’s riden a long way today and he’s pretty sore.
Tim: Oh, harden up.

Day 16 – Day 18… Oodla Wirra Pub

by admin on September 27, 2008

Lots more awesome fun bush camping. :-)

We all wound up at the Oodla Wirra pub that night.  The pub was really all there was to the town (excepting the Quarantine Checkpoint), but it was a pretty awesome pub.

Day 15 – Iron Knob

by admin on September 25, 2008

Very exciting day today, as I saw my first ever real wildlife – four emus wandering through the old town of Iron Knob.  And yes, Harry loved the name.

I also got on the bike for the first time today. [click to continue...]
